WHAT IS TRADITIONAL FAMILY?

December 8, 2022

A man, a woman, and one or more of their biological or adoptive children make up a traditional family. Most traditional households have a husband and wife relationship. Watching Dr. Heathcliff "Cliff" Huxtable and his wife, attorney Clair Huxtable, raise their five biological children in Brooklyn, New York, was an experience for viewers of The Cosby Show. Peter and Lois Griffin, the couple who plays Family Guy, rear their three children there.

Over the past 40 years, there has been a steady decline in the number of conventional families in the US. In the United States in 1970, 40% of all households belonged to the traditional family. The percentage of traditional households had decreased to 25.6% by 1990. Only 20% of American households, according to the US Census Bureau's estimate from 2010, were classified as traditional. A nuclear family is another name for a traditional family.

The term "non-traditional family," which is used to refer to all other varieties of non-traditional families, is distinct from the term "traditional family." If you've ever watched the television program Modern Family, you've probably seen a variety of unconventional family formations.

One parent and one or more biological or adoptive children make up a single-parent family.
